Meditate! It’s Better than Sitting Around All Day March 9, 2010

I love this quote. I found it sitting at the doctors of all places. I had been waiting for at least 30min and have a very irritable child by my side, sickly and miserable surrounded me in the waiting room and when the doctors did appear they seemed hassled and harassed. So when I read this quote I just laughed. Do you think that if a few people in that surgery knew how to meditate, things may have felt a little different?

Meditation is one of those things that is sooooo, simple and yet most of us don’t think to use it. It is one of those things that can be easily added into our daily life and can make a massive different. I know most people think that meditation means sitting around with our legs crossed chanting om. Although it can be this if you like, it does not need be. In fact, meditation is very easy and simple and you may already be doing it without knowing. The dictionary describes meditation as “continued or extended thought”, but I prefer the understanding, that “praying is asking and meditation is listening.” I believe that meditation is truly about quietening the mind chatter, ceasing the incessant thoughts and being still. In this space you leave room for spirit to step in, for guidance to arrive and your soul to soar. So how do you get to this place, what is the best way to meditate? Well it is different for everyone, but most techniques are so simple we miss them. I bet you have found yourself doing something quiet, that you love to do, and found that time has just slipped away. I would even bet that during that time, all your cares and worries just disappeared. It is also highly likely that you had some great ideas or inspirations that would make your life better. This is what meditation is; a quiet mind, where spirit steps in.

While I am a big fan of meditation groups and circles, as they offer great techniques and tools as well as a sacred space, I also believe that it is so important to take time everyday to meditate. And let’s face it, most of don’t have or take the time to meditate for an hour every day, but we could fit in five minutes. If five minutes is too much, take one minute, five times a day. The purpose of all of this is to connect to our soulful self, the God spark within, our heart and basically get out of our head. And the secret, the truly easiest way to do this, the very first step… sigh. Yes, you read right, sigh. Just let out a deep, heavy, sigh. You see you cannot worry, cannot be in your head and sigh at the same time. Sighing is the ideal way of letting go, handing it all over and dropping into your heart. So begin every meditation with a beautiful sigh, and then sigh whenever you want to get out of your head and connect with all that is.

Give it a go; I think you’ll be surprised

from my soul to yours

with love
